One food group that you should avoid includes vegetables that contain goitrogens. Goitrogens are not good for your thyroid because they can block the body’s ability to absorb iodine and they inhibit the hormone production ability of the thyroid gland. Due to this, the thyroid’s effectiveness is compromised. Sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, kale turnips and cabbage all contain goitrogens and you should avoid eating them uncooked.

Genetically modified soy products are the next item on the list. They can poison the thyroid gland and instead of keeping the body healthy, it harms it instead. However, fermented soy beans are a good source of nutrition as they are not genetically modified.

Due to the negative effects of non-organic foodstuff on the body, you should also avoid chicken, meat and dairy products which came from genetically enhanced sources. Hormones, stimulants and antibiotics injected to cattle and poultry can harm the entire endocrine system and mess up with the hormones. Thyroid hormone production can be decreased in these 3 ways: Radioactive iodide treatment, Anti-thyroid medication and surgery.

Highly processed soybean oil and margarine products should also be avoided at all costs as it harms an individual’s overall health. Instead, it would be better to go for olive oil, coconut oil, or extra virgin oil.

On the other hand, one of the best herbs for the thyroid is kelp. Tyrosine-containing food items such as bananas, oats, almonds, sesame seeds and fish are also healthy as they can help you have a fully functional thyroid gland.
