A beautiful bathroom can make all the difference to your home; not only will it add value to the property itself, but it will also create a spa-like space for you to take a bath, relax and unwind. However, if you’re not careful about the fixtures and furniture you choose when giving your bathroom a makeover, things can get very expensive. Having said this, it is possible to create a sanctuary-like bathroom, without spending a fortune, provided you plan ahead and are economical in terms of what you choose to buy.
Paint is one of the most effective, yet inexpensive tools with which to remodel a bathroom – no matter how dingy or dark the room currently looks, a lick of paint will help. If the bathroom is very small, you might want to consider painting the ceiling a very light shade – preferably several shades lighter than the wall, as this will help to make the space seem much larger. If you’re stuck with an old-fashioned coloured porcelain bath, sink and toilet, it’s best to opt for neutral, light colours on the walls, as these will create that calm, spa like look in the room, even if the fixtures are a bit discoloured and dated. If you’re lucky enough to have a large, spacious bathroom, the sky is the limit, in terms of paint colours – you can go for something traditional, like blue, or something a bit bolder, like red or deep pink. Take a look at images of bathrooms online, if you need some inspiration.
2. Make do and mend
If money is tight but you want to create the bathroom of your dreams, you need to be creative and make the most of what you already have. You’d be surprised at what a difference a few seemingly insignificant repairs can make to the overall look of the room. Things like replacing missing grout and tiles, filling in holes or cracks in the wall, or replacing the panel on the bath can give the space a new lease of life and cost very little. These jobs aren’t too complicated either, so even if you don’t consider yourself to be an expert in DIY, you should be able to manage.
3. Replace what you can
Buying a new bathtub or sink can cost a lot; however, replacing things like towel rails, light switch covers, roll holders and faucets is affordable and will transform your bathroom. These are also easy to replace – all you will need are a few basic household tools. In addition to changing these items, you might want to consider purchasing a new shower curtain and adding some artwork and a few new bathroom accessories to the space. Lastly, particularly if you have a small bathroom, it’s a good idea to buy a large mirror – if you can’t afford to buy a new one, you can always take a look around a vintage stall at a local market, or pop into a charity shop – you may get lucky and come across a beautiful antique piece!
