1. Download an App:

You can certainly use a pad of paper and pen to record the calories that you eat, however, if you have a smartphone, you should take advantage of it. There are plenty of great fitness apps that are made specifically for you to use to count calories! These apps are easy to use, have a ton of foods recorded in them and will even track the nutritional content of the foods you eat, not just the calories.

MyFitnessPal is an example of an app you can download for free right now. Through this you can type in the foods that you eat (apple, egg, SmartOnes frozen meal, etc.) and it will load the calories for you. It even has a barcode scanner that you can use to make counting calories easier than ever. There are even calorie counts for most major chain restaurants, which means you will know exactly how many calories are in your meals while you’re dining out!

2. Track Your Snacks:

Another way of  knowing how to count calories is tracking your snacks.  That small cookie you ate earlier or that scoop of peanut butter you ate don’t need to be recorded, right? They do! You have to record each and every bite of food that goes into your mouth, no matter how small it is. Calories always count, and they really add up when you eat those small things throughout the day. Whether you eat a spoonful of something or have some dipping sauce with your fries, you have to count the calories.

Tracking your snacks is going to be a pain at first, but you will quickly get used to it. The best part is that you will become more aware of what you’ve been eating within days of tracking your calories. This can mean finding yourself reaching for a piece of celery instead of that cookie for a snack.

3. Accuracy Counts:

Even if you’re using an app to track your calories; you have to make sure you are accurate. This means understanding portion sizes and how many you’re going to have. Learn how to read the nutritional labels on foods so you know for sure how much you’re eating. This is especially important with calorie counting apps, as some of them will automatically say you ate one portion, when in reality maybe you only ate half.

Another way you can increase accuracy is by using measuring cups and spoons whenever you cook at home. You can also use a kitchen scale if you want to make things easy. You can save a lot of calories by just being more accurate with those that you record.

If you need to lose weight, then a pound per week is a healthy and safe way to lose weight.  However, in order to achieve this, (combined with regular exercise) you need to reduce the amount of calorie intake by 500 calories per day.  For example, most men tend to lose weight by consuming 1500-1800 calories daily.  Whereas, most women need to consume between 1200-1500 calories daily in order to lose a pound per week.

Learning how to count calories is one of the easiest ways to lose weight and take control of your health. Once you are accustomed to it, the recording process will become like second nature. An added benefit is that you will also gain a lot more knowledge about the calories in foods, which will always stay with you when you’re eating.
