Nokia has tried to gain some of its lost glory with its Lumia series. It may not have been an overnight success but it did manage to turn some heads and get itself a fair spotlight. It is clear that Nokia Lumia did not supersede its competitors like Samsung and HTC in the high end smart phone market, it surly has given them a run for their money in the entry to mid end sector. Nokia is known to make strong and rugged phones but the market reception for the Windows platform has been Luke warm. Nokia introduced the Windows based phone in 2011 with Windows 7. The third generation Nokia phones sport Windows 8. Nokia has equally focused on the entry level smart phones as much as high end ones. The company recently introduced Nokia Lumia 520 which is a fairly loaded phone for an entry level. A while ago we had seen Nokia Lumia 620 getting introduced to the market. Both of these are entry level smart phones. Let see how they stock against each other.
Looks and appeal:
Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 620 have visible differences. Nokia Lumia 520 is a completely square phone with angular corners whereas Lumia 620 is lot more curved. The edges on a Lumia 620 are smooth and beautifully curve into the main design. It helps create a better grip on the phone and is more comfortable to hold. Looking at the size Lumia 620 is thicker than Lumia 520. Although the difference is hardly 2 mm, it does make it enough to notice. The dimensions of the Lumia 620 are 115.4 x 61.1 x 11 mm, 76 cc (4.54 x 2.41 x 0.43 in) and those of Lumia 520 are 119.9 x 64 x 9.9 mm, 75.7 cc (4.72 x 2.52 x 0.39 in). Lumia 620 is also a bit heavier but the 2 gram difference is hardly noticeable. Nokia Lumia 620 weighs 127 gms and Lumia 520 is at 124 gms. Both the phones are available in a plethora of colors. They are not limited to a white, black, red but venture further into colors like yellow, blue, magenta, cyan, lime and orange.
Nokia Lumia 520 is more of a budget phone as compared to Lumia 620, it still has a bigger screen. The Lumia 620 has a TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The screen size is 3.8 inches which packs in a pixel density of 246 ppi. With a 4 inchscreen, Lumia 520 is bigger but since the resolution is the same at 480 x 800 pixels, the pixel density is lessor at 233 ppi. The display clarity is much better on Lumia 620. The images are sharper and cleaner. The colors also look a lot brighter. Both the phones have capacitive, multi touch screen rich with 16 m colors. Adding to the advantages of Lumia 620, it is worth mentioning that the smart phone has a clear black display which enhances colors as well as text. The shortcut keys in the front are same on both the phones but on Nokia Lumia 620 they are back lit, a feature that is missing in Lumia 520. Worthy of mentioning are the viewing angles which again are better on a Lumia 620.
Performance and Memory:
Performance wise both the phones score similar. Lumia 620 has a slightly better processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 and Lumia 520 has a Qualcomm MSM8227 chipset. Unless you are putting both the phones to a test you really won’t notice any difference in the performance. The CPU for both the smart phones is a Dual-core 1 GHz and the GPU is an Adreno 305. Both phones have Accelerometer as well as proximity sensors. Similarly both the phones have an internal memory of 8 GB expandable by using a microSD up to 64 GB with 512 MB RAM.
The Primary camera on both the Lumia devices is the same. There is a 5 MP auto-focus camera that captures pictures with a resolution of 2592х1936 pixels. It is impossible to tell the difference in the day light photographs and videos but with the LED flash available in Lumia 620 it can capture images in low light as well. Lumia 620 also has a secondary camera in the front. The quality of sound in the videosrecorded is also better on Lumia 620 as it uses the Rich Recording HAAC chip and a secondary noise cancelling microphone. The lack of flash and secondary camera tips the scales against Lumia 520. This isn’t to say that the pictures taken by Lumia 520 are bad. On the contrary pictures taken is day light are crisp and do not have noise. You can comfortably share them on social network.
The battery backup is good just like all other Nokia devices. Between these two, Lumia 520 is better with a 1430 mAh battery which has close to 50 hours of endurance rating. Nokia Lumia 620 has a good battery backup as well but as compared to Lumia 520 it only has 36 hours of endurance with a Li-Ion 1300 mAh battery. If you are not putting them on rigorous tests both the smart phones batteries should last more than a day.
Both Nokia Lumia 520 and 620 offer 7 GB of free Sky Drive space. Both the devices lack a Radio which knowing Nokia’s track record is a slight disappointment.
Nokia Lumia 520 is well below Rs.10000 and is a steal at this price. It has a bigger screen and looks rich. Nokia Lumia is around Rs. 14500 with an additional secondary camera and a LED flash.
Nokia Lumia 520 is a surprising loaded smart phone for the entry level. If you are will to add a few more thousands to your budget than you will get the same phone with addition of LED flash and front camera in Nokia Lumia 620. Regardless of the choice you make be rest assured that both of these are extremely good performers and value for money.
