Home » Health » Braces and Treatment: Correction of Irregular Teeth

There are various ways through which you can care for your teeth. These include teeth cleaning, orthodontics and more. Orthodontics deals with the study and treatment of malocclusions or improper bites which might result due to disproportionate jaws, tooth irregularity or both. Complete orthodontic treatment includes the insertion of metal wires in orthodontic brackets that can be made out of stainless steel or esthetic ceramic.

The jaw bones and teeth can be moved by various kinds of devices such as expansion appliances, headgear, plates or removable appliances. Functional appliances may be used in growing patients aged between 5 and 14. The purpose of these appliances is to modify the jaw dimensions and relationship in case these are altered. This therapy is known as Dentofacial Orthopedics and is generally followed by a constant multi-bracket therapy involving full braces for aligning the teeth and refining the occlusion.

Different Types of Braces

You can get a fair idea about the different kinds of braces upon discussing with your dentist who specializes in veneers. The commonly used braces are:

Traditional Braces: These are made of stainless steel and occur at times in combination with nickel titanium. These are the most popular.

Clear Braces: These are cosmetic alternatives to traditional metal braces. They blend with the natural color of teeth or have a hidden and less conspicuous appearance. The brackets are typically made of plastic or ceramic material and work like traditional metal brackets.

Lingual Braces: These are fixed braces that are bonded behind the teeth, so that they are invisible to others. The brackets in lingual braces are cemented on the back of the teeth which makes them invisible. In standard braces, dentists cement the brackets in front of the teeth. This makes lingual braces a cosmetic solution to people who want to create an esthetic appearance with their braces and improve their smile.

Clear Removable Aligners: These are used for gradually moving teeth into their ultimate positions. Aligners are not used in complex orthodontic processes like in extractions, palate expansion or jaw surgery. These are very recent to have emerged. The primary attraction of the braces is that they are almost invisible, which makes them barely noticeable on your teeth.

Gum Lift and Smile Makeover: This is a minor surgery which is performed for correcting the shape of the gums. The bone and tissue under the gum is carved and reshaped to attain a clear look and shape. The lower and upper arches are also shaped for improving your smile.

Post Treatment Phase

You can avoid teeth from moving back into its original position by wearing retainers. Patients can go for post-orthodontic surgery like a gum lift or fiberotomy for preparing their teeth for use with a retainer. It helps improve the gum line contour once the braces are taken off.

Time and Cost of Treatment: The typical time of treatment is from 6 months to 3 years, depending on the extent of the case, age of the patient, location of teeth etc. Research has shown that the average duration is a year and 4 months. The costs may range from the expensive to the affordable.
