Alcoholism may be subdivided into two categories. One of which is alcohol abuse wherein there is the excess consumption of alcohol yet one is still able to function with or without the use of alcohol. The second category is called alcohol dependency, this situation is worse than alcohol abuse. The latter category needs dire attention in that the individual who is dependent on alcohol cannot function normally and cannot even perform activities of daily living without the prior consumption of alcohol. Alcoholism is a very addictive disorder in which individuals tend to consume excessive amounts of alcohol even if it destroys their lifestyle, health, and social relationships.

Chronic alcohol abuse can have damaging effects to the body. There is cirrhosis of the liver, inflammation of the pancreas, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, sexual dysfunction, and can also be fatal. Severe cognitive problems are not unusual for long term alcohol abusers. Dementia may set in much earlier and ten percent of the time alcohol is the usual cause.

These questions are put together in what we call the CAGE questionnaire. It is just four questions that will usually tell a medical practitioner that there is an alcohol related problem for a given individual. These questions are:

• Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
• Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?
• Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?
